I know it’s a necro replying to a 12 year old posting, but thanks for putting this album on YT. I listened to Mallet-Head years ago and never could figure out why they never hit it big.

Gotta admit, I really, REALLY like this version of it. Sure, the bass/lower end is too subdued, and overall sound balance is a little to biased to the higher frequencies. Ideally, those things absolutely needed to be addressed. Maybe it wasn't like this back then, and the recording has aged/worn out? I have no idea how demos were recorded. BUT - the faster pace, and what feels like a little bit more intensity, just works so well for me. And somehow, that crazy guitar-work at the end (3:46 onward - bends, hammering, etc) seems to come out a bit better in balance relative to the vocals, other instruments, etc. In the studio version, that bit seems *slightly* more subdued. Also, oddly, despite sounding a little thinned out, it's easier to make out the octave hops and an extra note or three thrown in by the bass in the 3:41-3:48 area. I feel that this recording, but with the lower end boosted some, and some of the excessive piercing/brightness at the top toned down slightly, might've been ideal. That is just my "I don't know squat about music production" opinion, though.

(And NB, I'm not referring to the instrument that's more usually called a harmonica.) Oh, and .... RIP Joe. Too often disregarded by comparison with Gerry, but most definitely an equal partner in the band and its output.
